    Texas West BBQ has been serving Texas-style barbecue in Sacramento since 1991. I guess longevity says something about how you run your business and what your customers think of your food because there are many places that don't last 27 years in the food service business, much less a barbecue joint because of the unique challenges they present.

    I was recently passing though Sacramento on the way to the 4th Annual Hot Q's & Cold Brews BBQ Competition at Feather Falls Casino & Lodge in Oroville, CA. My intention was to have a late breakfast at the newly opened Cracker Barrel restaurant in SacTown, the first one ever in Northern California. However, when I arrived at 11:20am there was no parking to be had and many people rocking away on the front porch waiting to be seated, so I moseyed over a couple of blocks to Texas West.

    I'd eaten here once before many years ago, so many that I can't remember when. The place looked familiar, but with an outdoor covered patio area added since my last visit. I had to wait a while to place my order because a big to-go order was being picked up...a good sign, I thought. As I waited, a couple of BBQ lovers got in line behind me. I asked what was good here, and they recommended the brisket. That's what I was going to order, anyway, but I was happy to have their confirmation.

    So I ordered the brisket sandwich with one side, and I chose french fries. I'm glad I ordered the fries because they were the highlight of the meal--a very generous portion, nicely crispy, just delicious. I can't say much for the sandwich. The bun was cold, with signs of just the slightest attempt to toast it, and topped with a goodly amount of thinly sliced DRY DRY DRY brisket flat. It wouldn't have been edible were it not for the generous amount sweet tomato-based sauce provided on the side by default. I cut the sammie in half, doused it with sauce and ate it, then picked off the meat from the remaining half and drowned it in sauce and ate it.

    The menu features brisket, tri-tip, pulled pork, chicken, turkey, beef ribs, pork roast, hot links, baby back and spareribs in a variety of configurations like sandwich combos, baskets, and platters, and even some salads featuring barbecued meats. They also serve burgers, chicken breast sandwiches, and BBQ burrito wraps and quesadillas. Sides include fries three ways (regular, garlic, and sweet potato), beans, potato salad, mac salad, cole slaw, mac & cheese, and Texas toast. There's a kids menu and a few items for dessert.

    I noticed the Friday Special was a brisket po' boy sandwich--chopped brisket swimming in BBQ sauce and served on a hoagie-style roll. I saw a couple of customers get it, and that's probably what I should have ordered because at least it wouldn't have been DRY DRY DRY.

    In conclusion, I doubt I will be back for a third visit to Texas West BBQ. More likely, I will circle the lot at Cracker Barrel a few more times until someone gives up a parking space.

    Those fries do look tasty! You're right, though. There is no helping that brisket!
