Have there been any TVWBB meet ups?

Not really. I have tried to encourage them on WSM Smoke Day on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, which would be an obvious time to do so, but people really haven't taken to them. Maybe there's too much happening on Memorial Day weekend.

A few years ago, I sponsored a tailgate party at an Oakland A's game. A few people from the forum showed up, which I appreciated, but mostly it was family and friends. So I've not done that again.

Anyone that wants to organize a meet-up is welcome to do so and can promote it here on the forum.

If you or someone else does that again, at an A's game, I'd go. Or wherever it was hosted. Assuming it was a weekend game. An evening weekday game could also work.

Yeah, for me, Memorial Day weekend is usually not a good time. I'm either away with family, or try to use that weekend to relax, because June is busier.

I'd consider hosting something at a later point. Right now, I want to get better or experiment a little more for myself. Only then would I want to make it for others.

I'm the same way if I cook for friends. I only suggest to them the things I think I do the best.

I think the reason not a lot of folks assemble is due to distance between members. From time to time folks post photos of a member or two meeting up. ...but nothing on a wholesale level.

There was a small get together a couple of years ago at a KCBS bbq competition at the Pechanga Casino and Resort.

Oh yeah, that's right.

Did people try each other's food? If you remember, what did some of the members make?
We met at a KCBS contest at Pechanga Casino in Temecula, CA. None of us were cooking, only spectating. Harry Soo was cooking in the competition. The only eating was barbecue purchased from vendors at the event.

My wife, however, got to help Harry Soo inject a pig.

As I remember it, some of us had a delicious 'dinner' in one of the ballrooms...
One of those 'one bite' type of dinners...
Main course was Chicken, followed by Pork Ribs, followed by Pork Shoulder, followed by Brisket. If memory serves me, we also were 'served' a nice follow-up dessert or two or three ... :)

Sure miss that event...

Yes, you were JUDGING and I and the others WERE NOT. :D

That was a great event. Hotter than you-know-what, but several folks camped at the RV park next door, there was gambling, good public turn-out, good vending. Wonder why this one hasn't made a comeback?

Casino / Resort expansion. That event area is filled with construction equipment, at least the 'NON-PCing' section is (across that road / driveway).

They apparently love bbq (check out Kelsey's onsite), so a future event is possible.
Heard the promoter saying they want 'us' back...

Another TVWBB get-together might still be a possibility....

(fingers crossed)

Did people have to make their own bbq sauce?

In a KCBS sanctioned contest, BBQ sauce is an optional element. If a team decides to use BBQ sauce as part of their entry, it can be whatever they want...a commercial sauce used as-is off the shelf, a commercial sauce that's doctored-up with additional ingredients, or a completely homemade sauce. The only KCBS rule about what goes into BBQ sauce is that it cannot chunks of ingredients greater than a 1/8" dice.

Well, I remember that being the reason given for cancellation of the event for 2015. I wonder why it's taking four years to get it done? I can see on Mapquest that the scope of work is quite significant, but you'd think they'd knock it out in a couple of years.

What might have been the 1st meet up was back in the Fall of 2003, I think (maybe 2002). 4 or 5 of us from TVWBB met just outside Pittsburgh for what we called SmokeStock. A couple of the older grate mods on this board came from that weekend :) It's been 8 or 9 years since I'veve been on here and thought I'd drop by to see who's still here from the good old days ...

First of all, it's a pleasant surprise to see you back...welcome Bill!

I forgot about SmokeStock, seeing as how I didn't go. :D A search on "SmokeStock" turns up several of mentions in 2004, so maybe that was the timeframe.
