I haven't been back to this part of the mountain since I was a volunteer firefighter, just out of high school. It was the fire of 1977, I was to be a 5th generation firefighter and this was my first & last wild land fire. I'm not sure what my father, and his fathers before him saw in being a a firefighter, but the legacy stopped at 4, the 5th gen said, thanks but no thanks

Anyway, it's been 40+ years, time to let bygones be bygones. Took the wife and wen't for a hike. It was weird to see the place some 40 years later, almost no evidence of the fire that nearly killed me (inhaled poison oak smoke, doctors had to trake my throat so I could breathe, it was close there.....

Anyway thought I share some photos of the area that I once considered burning hell

I still have the Led Zeppelin tickets to the concert I missed fighting the fire of 77, Just in case they ever come back, lol

This song always reminds me of the fire, ironically one of my favorite songs

Awesome pics & Beautiful wife! I bet she's a good woman to be able to tolerate & keep you in line :)

Glad that fire didn't get you.

Really nice pictures Chuck, Glad you made it out of that dangerous situation.... And boy did you miss one heck of a concert.

Some really nice shots of your hike Chuck. Familiar looking countryside. That second shot, complete with turkeys, reminds me of our property. A lot of scrub and underbrush. I can sure see how a fire could rage through there. Had to smile when I saw the shot of the Dead performing at Winterland. Been to a few concerts there back in the day. I enjoyed this post Chuck.

This the Mount Diablo where things have been shaking (series of medium tremors) on the SW Side?
(I was in 'Frisco / Oakland Sun-Weds, and checked one of the sites that shows seismic activity.)

77 I was living in hawaii. But it is strange to see a fire started by lightning as I did watching a thunder storm pass the hill behind our work place. Dry storm with lightning. Saw two strikes and fire start almost immediately. Fire fighters had to wait till the storm passed. Big portion of the hill burned but was slowed due to vegetation being green. No houses were burned as the fire was above the housing. This last summer a fire in three rivers came one gulley from my sisters house but the planes and helicopters stopped it in time. Amazing that no one lost their house.
