Broken handle on kettle grill

Hi all,

Long time since I have posted anything here. However now it is time.

I have a lid from an old kettle, where the handle is broken off at the welding. I have a welder myself and want to reattach the handle again. But when I am trying, and have removed the enamel there is no connection and I am not able to start the weld.

What am I doing wrong? Have anyone in here tried to weld the handles back on.

Make sure you've removed the enamel on both the kettle and handle near where you plan on welding. Try connecting your ground directly to the handle in an area that you have ground clean of enamel. If your ground clamp is too large to attach to the handle and still access the area needing repair you can use a smaller clamp or locking pliers and attach them to bare metal. Then attach your welder ground clamp to them. I've had to do this many times

I've had a couple of handles break off at the lid and I've reattached them with stainless steel hardware. I run the screw through a fender washer up from the underside of the lid, and use a standard washer, lock washer, and nut on the handle side. Not as cool as welding but perfectly functional.
