I'd like to give credit to the original post on this but it was in the old forum and it's long gone.
I did it on my 06 OTG and today I tuned up my Son Joshua's Perfomer and decided to take pics.

First flip it over and align the tabs into the slots correctly, and add self-tapping screws ( SS hose clamps were suggested in the OP or SS zip-ties ) I used screws.

Then slide in the pan and make a mark in the locked and unlocked position.

Square those marks up and take off like a 1/4"

I was in a hurry and couldn't find my cut-off wheel so the grinder did a decent job.

But with the proper wheel I did a better job on my 06.

What does this do? In the last 2 pictures, it kind of looks like that areas you trimmed are bent in?

Those are relief cuts. Some rings don't sit at a true circle and it binds on the ash pan ( which is a true circle) when you twist to insert it or remove it.
Those (to you) bent in areas are grinder residue.
