Stainless Steel grate for an 18" kettle

Hi all!

I'm kinda tired of looking at the old grate on my 18" kettle. I seem to remember that one of the users here had created a 304 stainless steel grate and was selling them on Amazon, I think that they had both 18 and 22" grates made. I'd really like to support both that user and Chris. Do y'all know if this is the correct one: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B01N5A67BY/tvwb-20

Thanks,

Dan

Here's a better one (IMHO) for $5 less and if there's a Home Depot near you, you can save additional on shipping by having it sent to the store (that most likely has it on the shelf) I have this grate in both my kettles and love it. I just wish I could get one for my 26

That looks like a really great grate. Do they only make that for the 22"? I'm looking for a new grate for my 18".

Dan, the one you linked to from Amazon is the one sold by someone on teh board. I bought the 22.5" hinged grade from them and it seems to be good quality. I assume the 18 inch one you linked wwould work, but I don't have experience with it.

The product linked from HD is the gourmet grate system from weber. It looks nice, but it is not stainless and appears to be 22.5"

It was indeed for the 22" / the 18" link is below. Both my links are for plated grates. If you're looking for solid stainless steel grates, then my links aren't for you. I'm not sure that your original link was for a solid SS grate, but I get the feeling from Chris, that indeed it was, and in all truth, the solid SS grate are most certainly better than the plated grate. The two Home Depot links are for "heavy duty" grates, meaning better than what came with the BBQ, but they are not solid SS, and solid is the way to go

I didn't have my heart set on a particular composition of the grate, it was just something that I was thinking about. I like the first grate that you showed me, Chuck, but it doesn't appear that that style (that allows you to put the cast iron grill inserts in the center) is made for the 18"-er. I'm gonna look around to make sure because, if so, that's the one that I want. If not, I may just go ahead and pull the trigger on the solid SS. Thank you very much for your help!!!

This is the grate made by TVWBB member David Somerville. It's high quality, you won't be disappointed if you buy one. I've used mine a few times in my WSM and I like the fact that there's no plating to wear off or flake off over time. And David's a good man, any problems and he'll take care of them for you.

All of David's grates and charcoal baskets are linked as sticky threads at the top of this forum...just look for the threads titled "304 Stainless Steel...".

Thanks Chris!! I just ordered the grate and the weber rotisserie kit for my kettle. Hopefully, I did it correctly using the VWBB links!

I wish i would've ordered his grate instead of this chinese made one by a company called "grill care". The flip up bind sometimes and i can already see some of the grates are flexing up. Don't really need the flip ups on a small grill like this. It was cheaper, but long term we'll see if it lasts 2 more summers. At least I don't have to worry about rust when it's not used for a long time.

I seem to make my grates last. Keep them clean and oiled. Course my problem is that target always has the flip ups on sale. So I now have three extra and the original one looks hardly used. So I suspect I will die way before I run out of grates. The ones I got at target were around 6 bucks. If I needed an ss grate I would get the one chris is mentioning.

I've got the flip up grate for my 22" kettle. I love it for indirect heat purposes. I usually don't do indirect on my 18" kettle. So, the flip ups weren't a necessity.

I'll admit it. I've been really bad about cleaning and caring for the grates on the 18"-er. Plus, it's now probably 12 years old. It's mostly about the way that the grate looks now that is getting to me, as it still cooks well. So, I pulled the trigger and ordered the SS one. I'm looking forward to having a pretty, shiny new grate...which I will maintain (I've been diligent about cleaning my grate for my new WSM...maybe I've changed. :D

Davids products are absolutely top notch, I wish I had any financial interest in his company! My baskets get hard use and aside from not being able to use them every day(sometimes there's too much snow for me to want to grill) I have not bought any equipment made any better for any price.
Two thumbs up for Mr. Somerville's goods!
Oh, and since I got a tip from another member, the small "Billy Bar" is another excellent product for cleaning, no possiblity for loose steel wire! I should have gotten another one for the cottage! Next year.
