Wood age

While on a trip to KC, I bought copious amounts of wood at Woodyard BBQ. I'm embarrassed to say that one bag of hickory got lost/hidden in my garage and I recently found it. This wood was bought in 2012 and to the eye it looks fine even now. Is there any reason not to use it after 5 years?

If you don't, I will! I'm in Kalamazoo!
But seriously, it might have lost most of its moisture but, soak it down quite a while and you should still get some good out of it. It won't be like the day it was bought but, it will fare better than five year old bologna!

Yea try it. Soaking wood to re-hydrate the moisture content IME only works for 1 to 2 yr old wood, but some are quite happy with the flavor of older dried out wood.
I got a boatload of cherry in my garage from 5 yrs ago and it works alright, nuthin special but ok if I use copious amounts.

I don't think there is any reason not to use it. You might need more chunks to get the same amount of smoke flavor.
