Thermocouple/thermistor question

I just plugged a thermistor into the thermocouple, and it reads 605 degrees at room temp. I've checked to make sure it's plugged in with the correct polarity. What else could be the problem?

Maybe I'm not understanding what you wrote but you plugged a thermistor into the thermocouple port? Thermistors can only go into the regular mono audio jacks, a thermocouple has to go into the thermocouple jack. A bare copper wire can also go into the thermocouple port and it will read ambient temperature too.

I plugged the yellow one w the two prongs in it. It's a thermocouple. My apologizes.
