Is the heat shield necessary?

I picked up a 2013 22" WMS for $125. The dome temp gauge was missing, one leg was bent, and the heat shield torn. I replaced the temp gauge, bent the leg back but I was wondering is it worth it to replace the heat shield. My 18" WSM doesn't have a heat shield. Any help is appreciated.

Long as you're not running your WSM on a wooden deck, you should be OK. If you're running it on cement with pigment, there could possibly be some discoloration of the cement, but that's not likely
