Routing temp leads in new Weber kettle

Just got a new 22.5 Weber kettle, had a Weber gas grill for years. Been reading here and other places about routing temp leads into the kettle. Seems like either cutting a small slot in the grill or drilling a hole for the leads are the two ways most people do it. Just looking for opinions on which method works best. Thanks

The lid is loose enough that as long as you are carefull with closing the lid there is no problem just laying the lead over the lip. I certainly have had no issues.

If you do a search here about this you will see that many people have cut a slot in the lip to just below the lid mating flange to give the probe clearance when opening and closing the lid while cooking.
works good

Currently I do exactly the same as George and BFletcher with my kettles and this works just fine. I've had an extra probe wire insert just waiting to be installed on my 26 but can't bring myself to drilling the hole...
