Inaccurate thermometer

I am on my 2nd smoke (chicken) in my new 14.5 WSM. For the first time, I used a new digital thermometer through the rubber grommet. I am shocked how inaccurate the "stock" Weber thermometer is. It shows 260 and the digital shows 312. Is the normal?

Unless you can place both probes next to each other you're going to have different readings. Even if your stock thermometer is off, you'll eventually develop a feel for the difference. If I want 250 on my grate, I know the dome thermometer I added should read a little below 200.

You can easily ck the accuracy of your thermometer. You might be surprised at how accurate it is after accounting for some interesting variables like altitude and barometric pressure. Like Phil said, if you measure from a different place you are going to get a different reading. IMHO: don't sweat it: BBQ is ready when it's ready. You'll get use to your cooker over time.
