Lit my Smokey Joe Gold without a chimney

Went camping/mining Friday night / Saturday. For some reason hot dogs sounded good. I took my gold Joe, a bag of charcoal, and a few oiled paper towels I save after cleaning my cast iron pans. It wasn't until I was about to light it when I thought about a chimney. No problem, I just took an oiled paper towel & set it under the grate, poured about the amount of charcoal a mini chimney holds, & lit it. It was ready about as fast as if I'd have had a chimney.

Next time I'll take brats, the dogs just didn't quite do it.

I intend to do exactly that with my new GA grill on my next camping trip. I see no reason to bring the little chimney even though it can nest inside the grill for portability. I'll use that extra space to carry more charcoal in ziploc bags.

Here's a couple of pics just for fun :)

I was a little hungover but we got up at first light & started mining (beating rocks with mini-sledge hammers) by 8am I think:

These are called Sugar Babies I think - brown obsidian. We also found red beryl, topaz of course (we were @ Topaz Mtn), apache tears

That was an old trick of starting coals. Good ya remembered. A friend of mine is deep into gold mining. Even got his girlfriend to quit a good paying job to do that. Crazy but they do well.
