Weber handle mod question

Been going through the archives and the TVWB site and decided that I want to add the stock looking Weber handles to the middle section of my cooker. Most reffer to using 3/4" flat stock aluminum. I purchased 3/4" made my bends (used the bolt on handles off my Weber fire place as a template) but the material is a bit to wide to accept the handles.

I measured the bolt on's that I had and the material is closer to 5/8" than 3/4". Having a tough time finding 5/8 x 1/8 flat stock locally so I'm Wondering for those that have done this how they got the handle to fit the 3/4" material. Looks like the down sections of the plastic handle is where it is tight the bottom will accept the 3/4". Should I shave the plastic handle to fit the 3/4"?

BTW I did the same with 1/2" stock but it looks a little flimsy especially after I drilled the holes...
