The Adapt-a-Damper - Open Source Project

UPDATE 27/03/16: Designed a swappable box for V2 to house the TC board developed by John B.

UPDATE 19/02/16: Added a version of the V2 to fit the "official" Delta fan. It's called Bottomcase_V2_Delta. Same Thingiverse link.

    UPDATE 16/01/16:

By request from a few forum members, I've created a two hole damper design, which is angular around the center of rotation. There are certain advantages to this over the "smiley face" opening in that it's opening is linear. If the HM tells it to open 34%, it opens 34%. Also, the overall cross sectional area of the opening is greater by 46% over the previous design, which may aid in running a "damper only" configuration. The files are posted with the original design here ... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1194140

I've also released a 15 CFM version without the box on Thingiverse here ... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1272011

And, soon to come, will be a "swappable" box option to house the TC adapter board developed by John B. and RalphTrimble. I'm just waiting on the board and some components to do some mock-ups.

In an effort to create effective fan/damper units, I fell in love with Ralph Trimble's design http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?4600...to-Damper-quot, Although awesome, I felt the need to make something more public as this is the reasoning behind this forum, an open source project that can be shared by all.

I give you the fully open source, and interactive project ... The Adapt-a-damper.

The 1st design includes an interchangeable box with just a keystone cutout. It can be modified to an infinite variety of possibilities as it is dovetailed (of sorts) to the main body and removeable/replaceable/interchangeable.

The files can be found here ... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1194140

It's my intention to have all involved in this forum to expand upon the design as you see fit, and share your mods with the community. Great wishes to all.

    Cheers,
    W

looks great! One of my ideas is to "cram" a nodemcu/arduino mini or even just the esp8266 chip and mini within a small fan design enclosure. No display/buttons but will be controlled via wifi (local or internet, or bluetooth when their new chip comes)....

    thanks for sharing...

You mean steal a damper? I have shared my files with anyone who wants to print them for THEMSELVES, the only people I have refused to give my files to are those that want to go into business printing and selling the units. I just don't see how I am obligated to aid someone else in starting up a business on the back of my hard work?

I have spent well over a year, probably close to two, developing and perfecting the Roto Damper design, the RDTC board and techniques to run the thing over the CAT5 cable. I have posted about it and shared the info here in the forum along the way, so the public record of who developed this damper system you are pirating is here for all to see. The very least you could have done was to come up with something original, but I guess you don't have the ingenuity to do that or you would have. Weren't you the guy that asked for my files and at the same time said, and I paraphrase, "it is similar to the ideas I have in my head but my imaginary damper is way better than yours", and you wonder why I didn't give you my files? It's not the best approach to insult someone when you are asking for their work! LOL

What you are doing is unethical and I urge anyone who needs a damper to review the Roto Damper sticky thread, which is a sticky thread because I was the one who did the hard work to develop this damper. You will clearly see this is design is a rip off of my work. I am doing my level best to take the high road here but I will not sit back and watch you do this without making a comment.

I created the Roto Damper, RD3, HMv4.2 sliding back case, "air-burner" and the "ping-pong" valve in my quest for delicious "set and forget" BBQ.

    I Concur, Ralph.

If you want the real deal, review the sticky here http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?4600...to-Damper-quot. but if you want to be involved in the bigger picture, and want to contribute to an open source project, then download my files, improve upon my mistakes, and make it even better. I am pirating an idea. I'm not, however, using this venue for capital gain. I originally came to this site to learn, and contribute where I can.I thought that was what this site was all about.

I will NOT be selling these for the main reason I feel it VERY unethical to do so on this venue. I will, however, make all my files public as an open source, free and available resource.

I urge all to expand upon the design so all can profit here with great tasting, awesome BBQ.

I love that idea! I had it in my head to do a full box to house the HM, But with your ESP8266 work, it just may be the way to go. Thanks for your ideas, mate! Oh, and I'm doing a cook later today dedicated to the ESP. I'll keep you posted.

    WBegg,

This is exactly the kind of reply that would make a sensible person be put off by whatever you are trying to do here. I'm not saying you're a bad guy. I don't know you outside of what seems like a bunch of pushy posts I've read here over the past few months. I'm also not trying to insert myself into your damper situation, but I want you to realize that I think you are going about your business completely wrong. I was the new guy on the block back in the summer and Ralph has been nothing but helpful from the get go. I'm sure you've read the Roto Damper sticky and can see he's on version 3. He's clearly been working with the community to improve his design. Instead of trying to split the audience on your "idea" of a damper, I think it would be in everyone's best interest for you to back off with your trolling, and at the very least, do what you can (not sure how) to make peace with Ralph and assure the drama stays out of this board. I have enough drama in my life that I take sweet, sweet, BBQ refuge visiting these pages.

What I'm trying to do here? I'm trying to make ideas public for the masses here on the forum. To introduce ideas so the masses can expand upon it. I agree that Ralph has spent ALOT of time on his design, but would it be just as wrong if I added a component to Mr. Mayland's board design and shared it here on the forum? Probably not (OSH Park. Search Heatermeter). My design has flaws, Ralphs design is proven. Let's all get together and make the ultimate damper, instead of whining about "you copied my idea!" . It's a forum, mates. A place to share ideas, not a place to strut egos.

We need more people like Brian and David (http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?6305...kmeter-needed) and Tom Kole who posts new ideas and gets everyone involved in making a product for all to share in.

Paraphrased well! I'm pretty sure it was something about "I have ideas to expand on the design". Thought I was speaking to someone that wanted to collaborate on an idea.

Noticed that since I posted, I already have 5 downloads. I urge those downloaders to respond with likes and dislikes, and if capable, copy and modify as you see fit for advantages/improvements.

    Let's all share.
