Outdoor Carpet

The most sheltered spot in our yard is under our covered patio next to my gas grill. Problem is, it's covered in outdoor carpet. Will the heat shield keep the WSM from melting the carpet? Figure I'd get an oil drip pan to put under it to keep gunk from getting down in the carpet.

Yes to the drip pan for gunk or stray coals.
But if your worried about radiant heat, a metal surface will absorb and transfer heat to whatever material it is covering.
Better to flip the tray over so you have some air-space between the carpet and your pan.

Good thinking. Was just wondering because yesterday the heat shield wasn't hot at all. Figured it was probably safe to put on the patio, but wasn't sure.
