There are reasons for "rules"

I now fully understand why you should wear shoes while using the WSM. Being too smart to follow the advice of others, I lit up the chimney and started carrying the lit coals over to my WSM. Being barefoot at the time, all the nice little bits of lit coals rained down on top of my unprotected feet. Fortunately, the discomfort was worse than the actual damage.

Needless to say, in the future I'll wear shoes. Color me older and wiser

Same thing for me recently. The sparks look very innocent floating down from the chimney, then one hits your foot ... Ouch!

How smart am I though, I still do it barefoot

I'll learn eventually.

Well, as the professor in our research lab used to say "Even rats learn"
