New York/New Jersey BBQ Restaurants

I love cooking my own BBQ, but sometimes I'd like to let someone else do the cookin'. We live in central New Jersey.

The only BBQ I've found around here (other than South American places that are really grilling, not smoking) is Famous Daves. But who wants to eat at a mass market chain?

Where are the best BBQ joint anyone's visited in the New York, New Jersey area?

Here's a couple I have been to in recent months.

The Grub Hut in Manville: http://www.grubhutbbq.com/

Not bad BBQ...def a feast there.

Paul Kirk's place the city:

Some of the best BBQ I have had in the city. Bacon chunks and burnt ends were amazing the night we went.

Wow. The Grub Hut sounds very interesting, and it's only a few miles from me. Never heard of it - but I'll be giving it a try.

I have been there many times. Food has always been good.

My favorite part is when getting close to the place is "that smell" that lets me know I'm about to get some good food.

Jeff, The Grub Hut will please.

Hot Rods...forgot all about that place! Went there a few years back...I concur on the meal there. Great food and a decent beer selection!

There is also Pop's in Madison. http://popscajun.net

Good food with a cajun twist to it. I think he's a bit pricey for BBQ (not that it has stopped me from eating there). But worth the visit. BYOB too.

MY REVIEW OF GRUB HUT:

I visited the Grub Hut for lunch this week. My first surprise was how few people there were in the restaurant on a Tuesday at noon. There were only about three occupied tables. It's a nice, casual restaurant with a Mexican theme. Friendly staff. The smell of smoke fills your senses as you enter.

I ordered a two-meat BBQ platter with brisket and pulled pork with a side of slaw, for about $8.50.

The portions were large, with a good serving of each meat, but a little cup of slaw.

Both meats were served with a small amount of their house sauce on top. There were two bottles of sauce on the table - house, which is tangy, not to sweet, and another smokier sauce which I was told has a southwest flavor.

The brisket was pulled - a bit of a surprise to me. It was delicious. Nice and moist, lots of flavor, mild smoke. I really enjoyed it, and bought a pound to take home to the family. Four stars.

The pulled pork was a bit of a disappointment. Nice and moist, but not much flavor. There was very little bark in the mix, and I found no pink bits of smoke ring. Most of the taste came from the sauce. I like my pulled pork with a much smokier flavor. Two stars.

I also ordered a full slab of spare ribs to take home. I was told that their spares are smoked, and their baby backs are not. Once again these came with a light coating of sauce, tangy, not too sweet. Still, they were a disappointment. My kids kept asking for some rub to put on the ribs because they didn't have enough flavor. There was very little smoke in the ribs, and again no sign of that distinctive pink I've come to love. My kids said, "Dad, please make your own next time. They are much better." Two stars.

The slaw was great. Not too much sauce. Nice fresh taste. Four stars.

When I get to Manville I'll give my review from there too.

I'm just wondering how a place with "Rod" in it's name can go wrong!!!

Ray Lampe the BBQ god himself is a part owner of this restraunt, the other owner is Justin Timberlake. He doesn't count though. He doesn't know how to cook good BBQ. They need the money and he needs a tax write off! Anyway, I've yet to make it in for chow. However I've read and heard great reviews about the restraunt.
