Old 18" WSM - Temp Probe?


 
I found an 18" 1997 WSM at an estate sale for $75! It is in great condition but it does not have a thermometer anywhere. I am getting analysis paralysis reading all of the threads about modifications.

What do I really need to start smoking meat - a candy therm or what? Where should I mount it (not afraid to drill into the unit) - the lid or in the middle of the center section?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!
 
Congrats on the new arrival!
The Mav is nice to have, though you can just run to HD or Lowe's and pick up a Turkey Fryer thermo similar to this for about $6.00. Just clip it into your top vent, and away ya go.
