Gas go anywhere bbq

I was scrolling through the local Facebook selling page when I saw a Weber go anywhere gas bbq for £15. A few people had commented but I sent the lady a message and it was still available :) she lives a 5 minute drive away from me so I have just picked it up, it has been used once since 2017 all clean in its box with the instructions. I don’t really need it but for £15 I could not let it pass……

How do you like it?

I suggested the Q1000 to my mom, but she doesn't want one unless there's a really good deal on one. And she wants a new one. Right now, they're $179. If I could find one for $140, she'd go for it.

Today I saw the Go Anywhere Gas grill. I was wondering if this would be a good suggestion.

I see there's a 10 year warranty. Don't want to have to use the warranty, though.

Arun although your mom doesn't want to buy used you can sometimes find secondhand but unused grills. I bought two Q grills so far. Both used but never used. :D
One Q2200 which the previous owned had tugged away in a closet but never used. Paid $75 including the adapter hose to connect to a 20lb propane tank.
And a Q1200 which came with two full propane bottles. Also never used. Paid $65 for that one.
Right now there are some brand new one used ones in my area:

Great suggestion.

Found a new, unused one on Offer Up. Didn't find one on 5miles or Facebook Marketplace.

$110 + $30 shipping. I'll ask her about it.

Just to get some understanding, what are the differences between the Go Anywhere Gas, and the Q1000?

I see some complaints about changes from a few years ago, to the Go Anywhere Gas. But does it still work well? Maybe the older design was better, but is the new design still decent?

Is this a good adapter?

Arun, the biggest difference is the Q1000 has cast iron grates, but this also makes it heavier. It is cast aluminum and plastic, so nothing to rust. The grate spacing is narrow on the Q so even asparagus does not drop through and if you like some char on your veggies, the wider grate bars work better, although I have the old style GGA with the skinny grate bars. On the GGA you have to setup the legs and attach the regulator and the top is not hinged. I have both and if your Mom is not using it for camping, I would hands down go with the Q1000. I use my Q probably 10 times more than my GGA. Hope this helps.

Thanks for explaining all of those details.

Will that adapter I mentioned in post # 7 work, to connect it to a big tank?

I would say yes. It is easier than refilling the small tanks if you do not need it portable. They also make a cart for the Q that you can usually pick up cheap on the internet CL etc. The cart for the Q1XXX/2XXX is different than the Q1XX/2XX so wait to get it after you find the grill.

She looked at the Q1000 again and now doesn't like the cast iron racks. She doesn't think they'll be good for corn. And that more flame will go through a stainless steel rack.

She wants a rack like a toaster oven.

Are there any stainless steel racks that can be used instead of the cast iron racks? Not as an expansion to the cast iron racks.

I can also try to show her this video of this guy grilling corn on a similar rack:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s5_XEAyFRc

Otherwise, what should I do?

Go with the Go Anywhere Gas? (I haven't mentioned that to her yet). Nevermind, the Go Anywhere Gas also has grates that look similar, even if they aren't cast iron.

Another brand/model?

Ultimately, I want to solve her problem of not having a portable grill anymore. If I can't convince her that a cast iron rack will be just as good, and if there are no stainless steel alternatives, I need to find something else she will believe in.

The Q1000s that are open box don't accept returns. If they did, at those lowered prices, she would have been ok with trying one. The ones that do accept returns are at normal prices, which she doesn't want to do.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Arun, have you ever seen a “Go anywhere”?
It’s a totally different CONCEPT from a “Q” whatever.
Pal, you need to do a little research about what your mother will do with it.
The “Q” is probably twice the area of a “Go Anywhere”.
The Cast Iron grates are head and shoulders above the wide spaced things she is thinking about but, she is your mother.
A “Go Anywhere” in its gas format should not be more than a hundred bucks, it’s small but, it will “Go Anywhere”!
Not much bigger than a large shoebox, the “Q” is easily three times that.

90% of the time she will be grilling 3 or 4 ears of corn. She may occasionally add asparagus.

I will try to show her the video of the guy grilling corn on the Q1000. But if she still wants something with a stainless steel cooking grate, is there a brand and model of a portable gas grill someone can recommend? Her old one from a long time ago had a stainless steel rack, so that's probably what she trusts.

Arun, as a person who grows and grills asparagus a couple of times a week when it is in season, and has 19 Webers both charcoal and gas, the Q is ten times better with the narrow openings on the cast iron grates. I grill broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, onion slices, peppers, roma tomatoes, even romaine lettuce all on the Q. Very rarely do I grill veggies on anything else. The cast iron grates are porcelain enameled so will last quite a while if looked after. I think you will be hard pressed to find a small grill with SS grates. You can buy RC planebuyer ones for the GGA but they cost more than a new grill. They also have SS on Amazon for the Q but they are expensive too. Here are some pics to show what comes off the Q. Sorry I don't do corn. :(

Noit that I'm familiar with the GoAnywhere grills, but I recall reading not long ago about how the quality of them has gone down. Does anyone know if that's true?

BobJ, I can't say the quality has gone down for the Go Anywhere Gas, it's just that Weber moved away from using a flavorizer bar (part number 9201) to cover the burner and replaced the plated steel wire cooking grate (part number 80631) with a porcelain enameled cooking grate, which is a pain to clean

You can either call Weber to order the parts or go to Amazon and buy them:

- cooking grate: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B01M7VTPUE/tvwb-20
- flavorizer bar: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004VWLY/tvwb-20

@Richard in NS, thanks for the pictures.

I've held off discussion on a gas grill for a few weeks because I think it's better now to have the conversation in person, rather than over the phone. So I will wait until I see her next time.

As I mentioned earlier, she did like the Q1000 except for her concern about the cast iron grates, and whether it was good for grilling corn.

What does everyone think about this strategy?

1) I show her this video of this guy grilling corn (the main thing she wants to do):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s5_XEAyFRc

And Richard in NS' pictures of other grilled veggies.

If she still wants stainless steel grates, then I show her:

2) The Weber Gas Go Anywhere, and the grates Jepprey P linked to.

3) This Cuisinart gas grill with stainless steel grates:

https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0776YLNBD/tvwb-20

Arun, that sounds like a plan. Just so you know, the grate Jepprey linked to for the GGA is chrome plated steel not stainless. That is what I have and it works fine but they do not last long under heavy usage. In the end, she has to be happy and I think that is what we all strive for with our parents. Good Luck with whatever she chooses.

Richard.
