HeaterMeter vs. ThermoWorks Signals + Billows

I have one Signals and Billows. Bought to see if I could use it to replace a HM I'd built probably 7 years ago that just now started to get a little finicky. After heatermeter I totally hate it, and I love all things thermoworks. The app is basic and horrible, settings dont always save right...

    HeaterMeter and Electric Smoker

I would think it might be something you could do with a solid state relay (ssr) these are often used in automated Homebrew setups to control a heating element. It controls by rapidly turning the element on and off.

    Why mess with fans?

Exactly - sort of like I mentioned ages ago here: https://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?63364-Feature-idea-(hardware-and-software-necessary)&p=701792&viewfull=1#post701792 after posting I vaguely remembered that I'd brought it up before Definitely true, my servo setup is pretty adaptable to just...

    SmartFire controller

Smobot looks suspiciously HeaterMeter like to me. Also servo control is great but on on the exhaust, should be on the intake as others have said. I would love to see a commercial product with servo based control vs blowers or ideally the option for either. Still haven’t found anything to...

    Why mess with fans?

Good point on the small opening. As you can see in the video below I can open the bottom vent quite wide using servo control Also you can get a linear actuator capable of 17lbs of force for less than $80 this could easily rotate the plate covering the 3 vents on a WSM or even the arm on a...

    Why mess with fans?

Thx I have been using ceramics so long I guess I just kinda forgot about the less efficient smokers. That said all the commercial smokers including things like WSM were designed to run at a set temp off a human controlled vent and do a pretty good job of it once you get it dialed in. I do have...

    Why mess with fans?

I've been using a 4.2 heatermeter for quite some time with a Primo Oval XL. I'm always intrigued at the elaborate damper/fan designs here but am a little curious why people feel the need to use a fan at all. I simply have a servo opening and closing the bottom vent on my Primo and it's worked...

Is using just servo control enough?

The most airflow is with nothing other than the built in damper on the smoker itself. I have mine set up to just directly open and close the damper on the grill itself, works perfectly

    Looking for an addition feature...

Interesting, I use a primo - servo only, overshoot has really never been a problem for me. The only time I had an issue was once I came inside to check something and left the lid open..... so much of the charcoal was going at that point it created issues for the first hour or so that the primo...

Heatermeter Aux. Thermocouple And two probe board V6.1(Final Version)

I'd love to see a version of this with all thermocouple probes.

Free thermocouple PCB to a good home

Wait there is a thermocouple only board? Where do I find the details for this, that's exactly what I want to build next. Just prefer using thermocouples for everything when possible.

    Primo Pure Servo control

Servo City has both high power linear actuators (starting at 25lbs of thrust) as well as gear boxes that can dramatically increase the torque a regular servo can put out https://www.servocity.com/html/robotzone_servos.html - these are "affordable"...

Feature idea (hardware and software necessary)

Thanks Bryan, I probably could hack it to use food probe 3 as I almost never cook more than 2 items at once that I'd use food probes on... naturally the second I finish I'll have a pressing need to use all 3 probes ;) For my personal setup having extra hardware spread around isn't too big a...

    Happy Holidays!

I agree I think all of these methods will work and have shown to work quite well. Not sure it would be really feasible to "prove" any method better than another as tuning and other factors come into play. I'd say they each have their own benefits for various scenarios. For me personally it was...

    Happy Holidays!

I do damper only on my Primo XL and get consistent temps. I think the Heatermeter does a fine job dealing with wind, and such at least in my experience. If anything I would argue a fan would be more susceptible to wind as even at 0% if there is no damper the wind will blow right in the fan, with...
