Pit Probe Polarity Problem

In my never-ending quest to prove that anything can be broken if you are dumb enough, I pulled the wires out of the jack on my ET-732 pit probe. I bought ET-73 probes for the HM, but I'd like to keep using hte 732, so I need to fix it. I have a generic 2.5mm mono plug, might grab a stereo plug to match the length, but now I'm trying to figure out where to solder the wires. Both are white. I read the same resistance give or take a few ohm when I swap the probes - does it matter which way they are connected to on the plug? I think not, but want to be sure.

If you measure the resistance between one of the wires and the metal braided shielding and get close to 0 ohms, that's the one you want to solder to the "shield". The one that has high resistance to the cable braid is the "tip".
