Charcoal ...pack it or leave it loose ???

Howdy All;

First time with Lump style yesterday...
had to break a few sticks (8"-10" long),
some other sizeable chunks also and alot of baby
pieces as well.
My question is;
Is it better to pack it in like teenagers
seenin' how many of themselves they can pack into
a mini cooper .....
OR,
Just let it find their own seats at the ballgame?

During yesterday's test fire and tub seasoning it just lay there
on the grate lookin' like lost soles. Had to keep groupin'em up
each time I moved things around.

Hank I pile all I can get in .When I finish just close vent to smother it out and use leftovers for next cook.
