I recently modified my WSM by adding a thermometer to the lid and had originally bought a 5" Tel-Tru for the job. Browsing around one of my favorite surplus equipment sites, I found a good selection of large face thermometers that lend themselves to this purpose for very good prices.
I ended up buying an adjustable angle thermometer with a 3" face and a 4" stem for $18.95, and the quality is very good. It comes within a few degrees of matching the temp of the Tel-Tru:
