I'm doing a 4 butt cook this friday and I'm using my new 10 cfm fan for the first time (the one I thought was overkill for a WSM) I was going to leave the damper slide fully open until up to pit temp and then close it half way for the rest of the cook. Is this what other users do?

Mike, that's exactly what I do.

I did the same thing Memorial day weekend. I did four butts. Had the damper on the 10cfm fan open half way and then before I went to bed I closed the damper full. It kept a steady temp of 228 all night long and I had plenty of fuel still to burn in the morning. I did the whole 16 hour cook without having to add any fuel.
