I just got a WSM for a gift and have a question about placement during cooking. Can I place my WSM on a wooden deck or do I need to insulate between it and the deck? Does it need to be placed on something? What do other people do? Thanks

I would recomend that you put down something fire proof if you are going to cook on a wood deck.

You can get a large drip pan at an auto parts store for less than 10 bucks, which is big enough for the WSM and also provides a place to put your lid while you're tending your food. Not only do you want to protect against fire, but you'll also need something to catch the occasional drip of black liquid from the bottom of the cooker, mop and sauce splatters, etc.

If you MUST cook on a wooden deck, please use firebrick or at lease 4 18" square patio bricks under your cooker. These can be stacked when not in use to save space.A fire extinguisher near by is always a good idea.
