Im new to the smoking process and have a cherry wood question.

Im making a recipe that includes cherry wood chips but cant seem to find any local(nj).

i have a cherry tree on my front lawn that still provides cherries all summer long, although they taste a bit tart.

can i prune some branches, remove the bark cut some chunks and use it?

thanks-

Not sure where in NJ you are but the last time I was in the Pelican in Morris Plains they had some bags of chunks or chips. They weren't cheap but the black cherry chunks made for some tasty eating.

Tommy,

It is best to have seasoned / dry wood. Trim some braches and let them dry and in a few months (3-4) you will have good smoke wood. It is not necessary to remove the bark.

Good luck,

What Ray said, no need to remove the bark.
