performer lid thermometer (setup) on WSM?

Has anyone tried mounting the thermometer and thermometer holder (silver rectangular piece that fits inside the handle) from a performer on a WSM?

It seems like you would just have to drill a hole through the lid and through the metal handle section to make this work....
I realize the performer has a "flatter" section on top, not sure if the therm holder could accomodate that or not...

any thoughts? it seems like it would be a cleaner mounting than my current cork&therm stuck in the vent hole..

If you're gonna drill a hole, might as well go with a Tel-Tru and get a larger faced thermometer for ease of reading.

I'm also in the process of trying to decide which method to use for mounting a thermometer on my WSM.

I don't understand why Weber doesn't include a factory thermometer with the WSM. They are installed on every Gas BBQ as well as the Performer.

I don't think it would add very much cost to the unit. I know the pros like to have the flexibility of adding their own custom install but it would be beneficial to the average Joe.

yea, i looked at this possibility when i got home last night and it almost certainly would not work... the handles on the performer are taller to accomadate the therm holder, plus drilling a hole that would allow the therm to slide in at such an angle would be tough...

Matt is right, better to just get a TelTru...

Jeff, I agree that would be nice..

I'm using the Weber Performer/Genesis thermometer through the vent rivet. I cut a 2" length of plastic air line as a spacer and its secured inside the lid with a speed nut. Tel-Tru also has the same for Weber gas grills and have a calibration nut on them @$20

I drill the rivet out and use a Riv-nut. A Guru eylet would work also.

here is a really easy way to check temp in the wsm.im sure most of you have seen something close to this but here is how i did it.

i took the cap of a grey goose vodka bottle, cut the cork part off,and stuck a weber thermo through it.then stuck that in the top vent of the lid, like so.

as you can see it fits perfectly.

i also got an oven thermo to sit on the grate to check the difference between the top of the lid and the actual cooking area.as shown in this pic here

i have noticed its 20/25 degrees hotter on the lid thermo than it is on the grate.so i get the lid thermo up around 250,then i know im around 225 on the top cooking grate.now if i ever use the bottom cooking grate ill buy another overn thermo and keep it posted there.
