Mesh wire on charcoal grate

I have some leftover mesh wire from another project. It has square holes that are about half an inch on each side.

If I put that over my charcoal grate, will it be able to withstand the heat of the smoker? I need something to keep the bigger pieces of leftover coals for the next smoke.

Unless it's the gauge of chicken wire, you should be fine. I use the cooking grate from a Brinkmann Gourmet smoker for the same purpose, and the heat hasn't affected it at all. (And it's not as heavy as the WSM cooking grates.)

Is the wire mesh welded or woven, hot dipped plated or coated would be somethin to watch for as also a proper gauge as Larry said.
I use lump, so I just picked up another charcoal grate at HD and set it 90 deg.
