Has anyone had trouble with the 4" probe installed in the lid interfering with something you're cooking on the top grate? Is the shorter probe better?

BTW, 18" model WSM.

Nope, no problems with the 4" stem. I used to use a 6" stem till I broke it. If it does happen to hit the meat, you can always turn the lid and find a gap somewhere. I like the longer stems because it gives you a closer reading to the top grate cooking temp.
 
Not to bad I use the 4" too. If I use a rib rack I just turn it so it doesn't hit and have never had trouble with pork shoulders at all. Brisket has been fine too.
