In reading up on yugurt, I found the Dairy Connection Inc. which has yogurt cultures and buttermilk culture too. Can you make buttermilk similar to yogurt-just add the culture?

Yes. Cultured buttermilk is not the same as 'old-fashioned' buttermilk, but it is the kind one often sees retail. (I buy old-fashioned and make cultured from time to time.)

Use about 6oz fresh, cultured buttermilk to 3 c milk. Put both in a clean jar, screw on the lid, then shake well. Leave in a warm area. It takes about 1 day but can go to 1.5. If it still isn't ready after that then the cultured buttermilk was not as fresh as it needed to be.

Yes. It will be less rich but that is usually just fine for buttermilk. I don't use whole milk for buttermilk.
