Cast iron grates on the SJS

I grilled Roadside Chicken today on my SJS with Craycort CI grates. Gave some good grill marks and really holds the heat well. Because the grates are wider than the stock grates, it's easier to flip the chicken without tearing the skin.

Good question, George! The ring that holds the two grill sections has two 3/8" 'bumps', for lack of a better term, on opposite sides. My guess is that, since they also sell grill/griddle sections that are solid, the gap is for airflow. It doesn't create any serious problems unless you have something that can fall through the gap.
