I built probably my what seems like 100th heatermeter this weekend and I am having an issue with the LCD.

I put in a known good atmega chip and recieved just 1 row of blocks.

I checked continuity between the atmega and the shift register- all seems ok

Back light works

I removed the atmega and put in a new one and just for fun i installed the rpi- it loaded the atmega and i was able to navigate to the heatermeter without issue on the network.

So that narrows it doen to the shift register and lcd.

I installed wires from one good heatermeter to the bad lcd and then both lcd then had the same row of blocks.

Could there be an issue with the lcd, then?

Also, on a side note, the mcp1700 is putting out 4.2v, instead of 3.3v. Its getting a steady 5v in. I installed another mcp1700 and still getting 4.2v. Maybe this has something to do with the lcd, but doubt it.

Not sure how, how I missed a short, But after I took a solder sucker to the Shift Register and LCD, I plugged it back in and sure enough it worked fine, there must have been some solder sandwiched between the Heatermeter and LCD.

All's good
