1st cook on my (new to me) Jumbo Joe

Searched on CL for a while (visited quite a few Targets in the San Jose area) looking for a new model of the Jumbo Joe. Thanks to this site I am totally sold on the size, weight, portability and function of the Jumbo. I'm calling mine "Squat" because he's very short and wide.

I finally found Squat on CL. Someone had a garage sale posting and I emailed her, "if the Weber doesn't sell, please let me know." VERY surprised it didn't sell and I picked Squat up for $30. I tried to talk her down, but she said her husband would kill her if she went any lower. I'm surprised they wanted to sell it, Pearl and her husband tailgated and Squat is perfect for that.

My first cook was a tri tip and a naked fattie. I used 50 briquettes (3/4 chimney full). I think it was too much for this cook, but I didn't want to run out on this weekday cook.

You can see in the pic I used 10 briquettes, then added my firestarters (3 dryer lint balls wrapped in a dryer sheet dipped in veg oil). I lit my starters then added 40 more briquettes. The briquettes are generic Lucky's branded charcoal. I usually use lump, but I haven't read anyone using lump in a Jumbo.

Coals got hot and gray in 15 minutes. I used a half brick to corral the charcoal to one side. I'm hoping to find those Weber char-baskets on sale someday or maybe make some from some of that diamond mesh metal (what's it called?). Anyone know how much charcoal I could get away with for a 2 hour cook?

I took the naked fattie off when it hit 160. This is the tri tip getting ready to come off at 149 degrees. I made a foil packet of apple wood to put over the coals. I soaked and froze the packet and only used a fork to make holes for the smoke. The tri tip took about 90 minutes indirect and the smoke was still wisping out of the packet. Also, the coals were still really hot and there was a lot. I think I could have gotten away with 30 briquettes instead of the 50 is used?

Here's the finished product. I should have taken a picture of the tri tip sliced because it had a great smoke ring. I really like my Squat, I can't wait to do more bbqs on it. Hopefully I can find a stock pot and turn Squat a little taller and make him into a WSM, anyone have any tips on modding a Jumbo Joe? I'm interested in what I should mod on Squat. I want to add extension handles to both vents. It was a little sketchy shutting the bottom vents closed.

Hmmmm... I just spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how post pictures using Flickr. I tried a few ways:
1. https://www.flickr.com/photos/37166068@N00/15840541631[/ img] put space after / to show what I put
2. used insert link in the posting tools above [IMG]https://www.flickr.com/photos/37166068@N00/15840541631[/ IMG]
Here's the link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/37166068@N00/15840541631 and a short link that Flickr supplied https://flic.kr/p/q8LV9K
Do I need to get the link to the direct picture? Does anyone know how to do that in Flickr?

Please help

In your original post, you had the "/" backwards "\" Everything else was right. There's probably an easier way, but this works. Select HTML link from the "share" thing on Flickr, look for where it says "<IMG SRC=" and copy the URL that ends with .jpg.

<img src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8647/15656757927_7c6a1e82aa_z.jpg

click the INSERT IMAGE icon up on the toolbar

[IMG]http://i576.photobucket.com/albums/ss209/Demosthenes9/WEb%20Stuff/toolbar.jpg

then paste the URL into the box that pops up.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi Walt

if I had to guess, it's because you link(s) aren't complete. There no "jpg" at the end of them

Anyway, if you picked up a JJ for $30, that's fantastic, I've been watching CL, and haven't even seen one come up, let alone for a good price

Look forward to when you get your pictures to display, sound like a great cook you had going on

Woohoo! Thanks for all the help DaveW on posting my pix. I went ahead and updated the original post (OP). Now I'll remember to look for the direct .jpg link, not the link to the Flickr page. I'm not in charge of the turkey this week, but I'm taking my Squat Jumbo Joe to my inlaws for tri tip and sausages. I know the smoke flavor is going to wow the family.

Now, I need to find some time during the holidays to turn Squat into a WSM.

You're welcome Walt. Bet the family will love it.

I really like my Squat. I did a 2nd cook last night with burgers. These Jumbo Joes are very effecient because the coals are still blazing when I"m done. I'm def adding too much charcoal. I checked this morning and there are still a lot of coals left over. I'll knock off the gray and resuse them. I like that if I close both vents the charcoal doesn't burn all away.

I noticed smoke leaking out where the lid sits, is this normal? I'm used to working on my Akorn Kamado so only smoke comes out the top vent

I think it's pretty normal. I get some smoke seepage under the lid depending on how much wood I've added and temp of the coals. I wouldn't worry about it. Keep in mind, the JJ doesn't have much volume above the grates so if you've added a few wood chunks, that smoke has to come out somewhere. If there was a leak, it would be more difficult to choke down the fire when you close all the vents. Based on what you've said about leftover coals, you aren't having that problem. :)
