Vortex?

I've been seeing references to a 'vortex' in various grilling posts for the last couple of months, but am not clear on what it entails. Is this a method of simply placing coals in the center of a kettle with indirect heating zone around the perimeter, or does this refer to the use of a manufactured product? If so, how does it work?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but sometimes I feel like I 'missed that day of school'.

That looks very similar to a chimney/flue vent flashing. The one on my roof looks identical and it's a 6" flue. Typically they are galvanized but SS versions are available.

That Vortex looks like an interesting idea! Mmmmmm, maybe...

Shipping cost looks excessive, tho'. Maybe...

Thanks for the info!
Looks like hotter direct temps. Now someone just needs to make a reverse vortex (perimeter ring) for kettle pizza cooks?

Thanks again.

Just buy a smokey joe silver and cut out the bottom vent, flip it over and you got a vortex.
