I have had the same problem. I'm not sure that it was a Stokerlog issue. It may have been an issue with the Stoker itself. I was using a hardwired connection.

Another thing to consider is that closing the fan damper probably increases the velocity of the air coming out of the fan, which could be stirring up the ashes.

I might pull the trigger on a NG Weber that I found on Craigslist that I want to convert to propane. If the parts are compatible maybe we can swap parts.

What size/type of smoker do you have and what size fan are you using?
