Avatars should measure 80x80 pixels and have a file size of less than 10KB.

When I notice avatars that are a lot larger than 80x80 pixels or with a file size greater than 100KB, I delete them and ask the member to choose another avatar.

The discussion forum software will auto-resize large avatar images to 80x80 pixels, but upon page load you may see the larger size for a second before it resizes down to 80x80. To prevent this annoyance, using an 80x80 pixel avatar image to begin with is preferred.
