Hi all,

If you have a signature that's more than 2 lines long, please shorten it to 1-2 lines. There's something about a short message followed by 8 lines of signature that just drives me crazy!

So if your signature is like this:

WSM
OTP
SJP
Summit gasser
WeberQ 220

Please format it like this:

WSM, OTP, SJP, Summit gasser, WeberQ 220

Thanks,
Chris

Bumping this topic. Please keep your sigs to two lines max.

For example:

Treasurer, Upper Wazoo BBQ Association
Chilled, Grilled and Thrilled BBQ Team
KCBS/CBJ #99999
22 1/2" WSM
2 18 1/2" WSM's
22" Weber Kettle
Smokey Joe Platinum
Weber Genesis Gasser

Can be shortened to:

Chilled, Grilled & Thrilled BBQ Team
22" WSM, 18" WSM (2), 22" Weber Kettle, SJP, Weber Genesis

Regards,
Chris

Whoops, Finally found this. I agree and have been kind of embarassed that my sig seems so long compared to many of my posts. In fact, I've been so embarassed that I've felt FORCED to really pack this reply with a solid bit of "useful" observation, just so that the size of the post will be larger than my current sig format. Rest assured that my next step, despite the two other more useful tasks I need to accomplish on TVWG will just have to wait. I hope this is satisfactory Wink Rich

Ok, Chris. Now that I'm better formatted, I'd like to offer a suggestion. For any newbie (like me), the box where signature is to be entered "suggests" that there is a limited line size which leads easily to a vertically oriented signature. Before finding this thread, I actually tried twice to modify the sig with html (not permitted) just to eliminate the multiple lines by using smaller text.

And as another formatting suggestion, the box for entered post responses like this would be a lot "friendlier" (and, to me, promote more brevity) if it was more like 60 or 80 characters wide instead of being crammed into the upper left corner. We have no opportunity to see what our posts will really look like.

Finally, I just noticed for the first time (observant person that I am) the "Please shorten your Signatures" heading at the top of the post-entry page. Roll Eyes Rich

Rich,

This bulletin board runs on a hosted service that includes the software. It's not the greatest software in the world and does not contain many features you find on other bulletin boards. I do not have the ability to modify the size or placement of input fields without hacking the code, something I'm not going to do. Someday I will move to a more powerful software package, but for now it is what it is.

Regards,
Chris

Yeah, I was afraid of something like that. Be sure you're really ready if you do ever decide to change -- you know people don't like to do that! Roll Eyes Most of my life and careers have been dedicated to change management -- it's always a tough sell. Rich

Chris, is there a way in the edit profile section to actually see how many lines your sig will take. I edited mine today, per your request, but the little box provided showed I used 2 lines, yet when my next post came out I only had used one. If the little box can't be changed perhaps directions stating haow many spaces could be used to fill 2 lines as you would like.

Not wanting to step on toes here... but Mark, the only way to see the result is trial & error. The edit box is impossibly small compared to the end result. If I am not mistaken, the only way to change the edit box size in this forum software is to mess around with the code.

Many forum software platforms offer a character limit, settable by the admin. This wouldn't always take care of the lines, though.

What might be better would be if there was a modification (or setting) available to limit the number of times per page a signature appeared. With this, only your first post on any page would have your signature & not every one of them.

Again, mods - if I am out of line here, please edit or delete this post & accept my apologies.

Mark, even the browser width has an effect on how many lines your signature ends up being on any given person's screen. Given the nature of this software, all I ask is that people use trial & error to produce a reasonable 2-line signature.

Thanks!
Chris
