Tek a few days, starting in Carolina, take I-40 West till you hit Lexington, keep on I-40 (or if you have more time, the byways) till you hit Mephis. Stay on I-40 till you hit US-71. Take US-71 into KC. You may also be able to veer north into Owensboro along this trip.

(straps on the asbestos shorts) We went to North Carolina last year and were pretty disappointed with the que-joints we visited. None were bad mind you, they just didn't seem to meet our expectations. Of course, the fact that we stayed at the worst resort in history might have colored our perspective a bit.
That said I voted Texas. KC bbq would be too much like what I get here in Chicago, from what I've seen. Texas would definitely be different.

I would go back for some more Texas BBQ again, just not in July or August. On the way back home there would be a stopover in Arkansas for the country's best fried chicken at AQ Chicken House in Springdale or Fayetteville. There is also some good Q in Eureka Springs AR. Then I would just have to walk it all off for about the next month.

I picked Texas only because living in KC, I've already been to alot of the joints here and taking a road trip in the town you live in wouldn't be as much fun.

Since I am in St Louis, I'm kinda familiar with KC style 'Q. The Carloina's have vinegar, tomato/vinegar and mustarad sauces - sounds like a real nice variety - and you can tour the Smokey Mountains.
This summer we are planning to New England. Should be interesting to see the diffence between New England and Midwest 'Q

I voted for the Carolinas. I've got some allure to that style. Maybe its the rumor that this is where BBQ as we know it got its start, but I'm not sold that is has its orgins in any one location.
Texas was a close second place, was almost too hard to choose.
Bob H. - Ive been to AQ Chicken House in Springdale...loved it. That opens the door for another whole debate...best fried chicken.

I picked the Carolinas since I'm from Texas and I've eaten cue from my travels to the other states (Memphis style is my favorite besides Texas, so far). I saw one of Bobby Flay's shows about 2 years ago when he did his BBQ Across the USA series (touring around the country) and he had the 3 styles of BBQ done for some hungry cowboys. Texas, Carolina and either KC or Memphis (my memory is fuzzy) were the styles and Carolina won, so I've been itching to try it since then just to taste the difference.
Before ya'll start Flay bashing, he wasn't the one cooking.
I would also vote for Texas. I do have to say though that if you are ever in Northern Alabama, you have to go to Big Bob Gibsons in Decatur. We were on our way to Florida last Spring and my wife! saw their billboard and said, "Oh, we gotta go there." I will say that like most on here, I feel like my BBQ is as good or better than any restaurant as I am cooking in small batch rather en masse. I have to admit that there is no way I can come close to his food. Awesome and the people there are nice as can be.

About five years ago I was delivering a new truck to FEDEX. I stopped at a restaurant for breakfast. They had pulled pork on the menu so I tryed it. THE BEST PP I have ever had. It was off I80 in Stuart, IA, The Country Kitchen. If you are ever there, try it, you will not be disappointed.
If you make to the Kansas City area be sure to check out Zarda BBQ, there are a few in the city and they are great!! Coldest beer in town and great BBQ - what else could a person want??
