Any good places to find apple or cherry wood for smoking? I am hoping to try the apple brine recipe from this site for thanksgiving with my new UDS (which is still under construction) but apple and cherry chunks are hard to find.

I do have a large stash of silver maple that I cut last year that I could use. Anyone ever used the apple brine from this site with Maple?

Search the web for Do It Best HWD. I ordered a couple of bags of apple and cherry. You may have a hardware store near you that you pick up the smoke wood and pay no shipping cost.I think it was around 9 bucks for twenty pounds, and nice size chunks.Only took about 3 or 4 days and it was at the store. Weber is now, or will be soon, selling more types of smoke wood both chucks and chips. I have their 2010 catalog and the have apple and i think cherry listed.

www.mainegrillingwoods.com

Just placed an order yesterday for some wild apple, black cherry and oak. My second order with them. Quick shipping, and the aroma when you open that box is heavenly. Big Grin

I think Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops, and Gander Mountain carry a decent variety as well.

Here's another thumbs up for www.mainegrillingwoods.com. The other day I received a box of apple I had ordered just a few days prior. Excellent service every time I order from them.

I have had good luck with the major hardware store chains like Menards, Home Depot, True Value, etc.

Shipping costs at most on-line sites will kill ya, DoItBest.com does not charge shipping,
they send your purchase to a nearby particapating hardward/lumberyard store and you simply go pick up your purchase days later.
As David mentioned above, the cost of they 10lb bags is quite reasonable and the free shipping is the green light.

Jim, that sounds great. I wouldn't have to keep bugging the local fruit orchard owner.

I tell ya, I've found really green peach wood to be super with pork shoulder. I usually use two to one peach and hickory, shaggy bark if I can find it. I do like cherry and apple with poultry and beef, however.

I'd find out where your local orchards are and pay them a visit. They have plenty of trimmings from their trees I'd bet they 'd be happy to get rid of. Most of the time they just burn 'em

I was at our local Lowes store and they had apple, cherry, and pecan chips in 1 pound bags. Which I thought was very convenient. And handy to. Razzer

Yes, make sure you call your local orchards, I just talked to mine and in mid March I'll be picking up a level 8ft bed of Applewood for $50!

Really? I'll have to look again. Every time I have looked Lowes and HD have nice bags of Mesquite and/or Hickory, but that is it. I'll have to look again.

Great post...I'll have to give it a look around...and load up.

I went to my local Firehouse Sandwich shop and bought several of their pickle buckets for $2.00 donations each. Problem was despite everything I tried, I couldn't get rid of the pickle smell. So I use them to store wood chunks which works well.

If you check the Cooking Topics page on the main website there is a article about how to remove the food smell from such containers.

Yea....I tried all that...still no good. But I noticed another Firehouse had the buckets out and they had been cleaned (or cleaned better) and did not smell at all. So I might pick up a couple more to mess with. At only $2.00 each with lid (and the $$ is a donation to the local FD) it is an idea situation. And confident they are food grade since well, they delivered food in them...lol
